What is DigiD?
The Netherlands is very progressive when it comes to digital communication between the government and its citizens. To verify the identity of citizens, the Dutch government has developed the central DigiD system. Municipalities, hospitals, insurance companies and other institutions that need to communicate with citizens can connect their systems to DigiD for central identity verification.
The mandatory ICT security assessment
To ensure the security of our identity, all DigiD connections must comply with strict security standards. Therefore, all organisations using DigiD are required to have an annual ICT security assessment conducted. The assessment must be carried out by a 'Registered EDP auditor'. If the security standards are not met, the use of DigiD may be (temporarily) suspended.
